University: Trading

To learn about trading the stock market at a university or college shouldn't be difficult. Every state has a public university and all have business classes, with some focused on trading as part of their education process. Most mid-sized cities will have a junior college that can offer trading classes, which may not be as thorough as one taught by a university, but which can still enliven an education.

Students who choose to attend a university to learn about trading can make it a part of their major. Students may declare themselves as a business major and take electives to learn about trading. The end result may be a university degree that will make them qualified to take a job with a stock market firm, an investor's group or work as a consultant. It's an education that will pay off in the end for those willing to pay the price and put in the hour that's required to complete a university degree.

A university degree entails many different things. Students learn the rudimentary aspects of trading, like buying and selling stocks, how to read financial reports, how to conduct technical analysis, how to understand business cycles, and how to interpret a company's fundamentals. A university degree indicates to the world that the graduate has a broad-based education and is ready for the next step in active trading.

Not everyone requires a university degree. Many entrepreneurs eschew the traditional university and take a different route. While most people prefer to acquire an education, it is very possible to succeed without a university degree. (Remember: Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard University in 1975 and still did OK!)

While trading doesn't require a specific degree, it can help in many professions. Just the knowledge about buying and selling stocks and options can be beneficial to someone who wants to squeeze a little money out of the stock market or protect their own retirement accounts.

A university may not have a stock market major or minor, but it has classes that are designed with the stock market in mind. Most schools offer an occasional class that talks about the viability of options, how to buy calls and puts, how to make money in a down market, how to short a stock, how to use non-directional trades, how to utilize neutral strategies like credit spreads and iron condors, how to put straddles and strangles into the game plan, how to make trades based on news, and how to set up a trading plan.
